Kokomo Ink is an independent literary press focusing on speculative fiction - especially science fiction and fantasy - written by Indigenous Pacific authors. We publish short story anthologies, novellas and novels.
We love speculative fiction
From science fiction and space fantasy to alternate history and supernatural romance, Kokomo Ink loves it all! We do not prescribe to the idea that one or the other of ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ science fiction is better, or that those categories are mutually exclusive. We also understand the boundary between science fiction and fantasy is often permeable. It is our hope that Indigenous Pacific authors feel unrestricted by such boundaries, especially as we explore and develop our own ideas of what constitutes speculative fiction.
We love Indigenous Pacific Island authors
Pasifika peoples are storytellers. The oral traditions (i.e. the oral literature) of the Pacific have sustained our cultures for thousands of years. But how fantastic does it feel when we see ourselves on the page and on the screen? Kokomo Ink aims to facilitate more and more of this, while striving to provide a safe intellectual space that has not always been accessible to Indigenous Pacific people within the publishing industry.
Why the kokomo?
‘Kokomo’ is a Papua New Guinean Tok Pisin word meaning hornbill. This bird is the clan totem of Kokomo Ink’s founder.
By adopting it as the publishing house’s emblem, it is hoped that it stamps the mark of the Pacific on our target genre—bringing together Indigenous Pacific writers as a united group (without negating our diversity) to advance and promote speculative fiction from our region.
